Generative Engine Optimization for Mobile Apps: The Practitioner's Guide to AI App Discovery

Most app marketers haven’t adjusted. That gap is the opportunity.
For the past decade, discovery worked like this: a user types a keyword into the App Store or Google Play, scans the results, and picks one. ASO professionals like me spent years perfecting the art of matching those keywords to get apps in front of the right users.
That model is breaking. And a new one is forming faster than most people realize.

What Is Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)?
Generative Engine Optimization is the practice of making your brand, product, or content discoverable by AI systems that generate answers to user queries. Think ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Copilot.
For websites, GEO is already an established discipline. Agencies are helping companies get cited in AI-generated responses. For mobile apps, the same shift is happening, but almost nobody has built the playbook for it yet.
Here’s why apps are different from websites: your primary listing lives inside a walled garden (the App Store or Google Play). AI systems can’t always crawl that directly. They learn about your app from what exists on the open web: review articles, roundup posts, Reddit threads, your website, and structured data. If those signals don’t exist or they’re inconsistent, AI has no basis to recommend you.
Traditional ASO focuses on matching keywords inside the App Store search algorithm. GEO focuses on building the external evidence base that AI draws from when someone asks “what’s the best app for X?”
Both matter. But right now, most app teams are doing ASO and ignoring GEO entirely. That’s the gap.
Why GEO Matters for Mobile Apps Right Now
This isn’t theoretical. The numbers tell the story.
ChatGPT processes over 2.5 billion prompts per day, catching up to Google’s 14 billion daily searches. Google AI Overviews now appear in 13% of all searches, double what it was in early 2025. Gartner predicts a 50% decline in organic web traffic by 2028 due to AI-mediated answers.
In January 2026, OpenAI rolled out the Apps SDK. Users can now discover and use apps directly inside ChatGPT conversations. “Help me manage my expenses” doesn’t send you to the App Store anymore. ChatGPT routes you to the best app it knows about.
Apple’s natural language search in iOS 18 means users can ask for “apps that help me focus at work” instead of typing “productivity app.” Semantic understanding, not keyword matching.
Google’s “Ask Play” feature in the Play Store uses Gemini to answer conversational queries about which app to download.
The gatekeeper is changing. It used to be Apple and Google’s search algorithms. Now it’s AI. And most app marketers haven’t even noticed.
The Data: Most Apps Are Invisible to AI
To put real numbers behind this, I ran an initial test across 20 popular non-gaming apps in five categories (finance, fitness, productivity, education, creativity), querying three AI platforms: ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude. Not branded queries (“tell me about YNAB”), but the kind of questions real users ask: “what’s the best budgeting app?” and “I need an app to track my spending.”
The results were more revealing than expected. (I’m currently expanding this into a full-scale research study across hundreds of apps. More on that soon.)
Finding #1: The same app gets completely different treatment on different platforms.
Rocket Money (a popular budgeting app) was recommended #1 or #2 on every Claude query. On ChatGPT and Gemini? Never mentioned. Not once. Meanwhile, Mint (which Intuit discontinued in late 2023) was recommended on every ChatGPT and Gemini finance query, but Claude never mentioned it.
Same category, same queries, opposite results. This means testing your AI visibility on just one platform gives you an incomplete picture.
Finding #2: Only 50% of tested apps appeared consistently across all three platforms.
YNAB, PocketGuard, Notion, Todoist, Duolingo, Coursera, and Procreate showed up reliably across all three. The other half were spotty or invisible on one or more platforms.
Brilliant (an education app) was recommended #1-2 on Claude for every education query but was completely invisible on ChatGPT. Canva, despite having millions of users, was invisible on both ChatGPT and Gemini for creative app queries.
Finding #3: AI recommends roughly 4 apps per response. That’s the visibility ceiling.
If you’re not in the top 4 for your category query, you don’t exist in that answer. There are no page 2 results in AI recommendations. You’re either in the response or you’re not.
Finding #4: Query phrasing dramatically shifts which apps appear.
Strava was recommended #1 for “best fitness tracking app” but dropped to #4 when the query was “best workout app for beginners.” Nike Training Club only surfaced on beginner queries and was invisible otherwise. Same category, completely different visibility depending on how the user phrases it.
Finding #5: Niche positioning limits discoverability to niche queries.
FlipaClip (an animation app) appeared when I asked specifically about “best animation app” on Claude and Gemini. But for “best creative app for iPad” and “I want to create digital art,” it was invisible across all three platforms. Broader queries go to broader apps. If your positioning is narrow, your AI discoverability is narrow.
Finding #6: “Free” framing is a positioning trap.
Khan Academy appeared on most platforms but was consistently listed 3rd or 4th, framed by its price (“free, comprehensive”) rather than its quality. The web describes Khan Academy as the free option, so AI does too. That framing becomes your ceiling.
Finding #7: Discontinued products can still outrank active ones.
Mint was discontinued over two years ago. ChatGPT and Gemini still recommend it in every finance query. Rocket Money (its spiritual successor) can’t break through. Training data has a lag, and once an app is established in that data, it persists long after the product stops being relevant. This is both a warning and an opportunity: the signals you build now shape recommendations for months or years.
The bottom line: the apps that AI recommends most consistently across platforms are the ones with the deepest third-party web presence. Not the highest App Store ratings. Not the most downloads. The ones that appear most frequently in review articles, roundup lists, and community discussions across the open web.

GEO vs. ASO vs. SEO: Three Different Games
These three disciplines overlap but target different surfaces with different mechanics. Understanding the distinction is critical because most app teams try to solve GEO problems with ASO tactics, and it doesn’t work.

The last row is the uncomfortable truth about GEO. With ASO, you control your listing directly. With GEO, your visibility depends on what other people write about you. That’s why the tactics are fundamentally different.
How AI Actually Decides Which Apps to Recommend
Before optimizing for AI, you need to understand the mechanism. Not just what to do, but why it works.
AI recommendation engines aren’t running live searches when a user asks a question. They’re drawing on training data and retrieval signals built up over time. Three factors dominate what gets recommended:
1. Citation frequency in authoritative sources. The more often your app appears in “best of” lists, review roundups, and expert articles on high-authority sites, the more confident AI is that you’re a legitimate recommendation. This is the single strongest signal.
When Perplexity answers “what’s the best budgeting app?”, it pulls from specific web sources and shows you the citations. If your app appears in 6 out of 10 top roundup articles, AI has high confidence. If you appear in zero, you don’t exist.
2. Consistency of positioning across sources. If TechRadar calls you “best for beginners” and Reddit threads say you’re “too advanced for new users,” AI gets confused and hedges, or skips you entirely. Consistent language across sources builds a clear signal.
3. Clarity of your app’s identity. AI needs to be able to summarize your app in one sentence. If your App Store description, website, and user reviews each tell a different story, AI can’t confidently recommend you for any specific query. Apps with clear, consistent positioning get recommended. Ambiguous apps don’t.
Traditional ASO optimizes for algorithm matching. GEO builds the external evidence base that AI draws from.
The Five Pillars of AI Discovery Optimization
I’ve developed this framework across real app audits. The pillars are ordered by impact. Tackle them in sequence.
Pillar 1: Test Your AI Recommendation Presence
The most direct question: when someone asks ChatGPT, Gemini, or Perplexity “what’s the best [your category] app?”, does yours appear?
Test this. Today. Open ChatGPT and ask 10 different versions of the question a user would ask when looking for an app like yours. Note:
- Do you appear at all?
- What position are you in?
- What does the AI say about you?
- Who else appears, and how does AI describe them?
If you’re not showing up, everything else is academic. This test also tells you which competitors AI currently trusts. That’s your benchmark.
Use fresh incognito sessions. Test on the same day so you get a consistent snapshot. If a platform gives different answers on retry, note both. Inconsistency is a signal in itself.
Pillar 2: Build Your Presence in Sources AI Already Cites
This is the highest-leverage action you can take.
Research shows that placement on authoritative “best of” lists is the primary factor in AI recommendations. If TechRadar says you’re the “best budget animation app” and PCMag agrees, ChatGPT will repeat that language, often verbatim.
Action: Google “best [your category] app 2026” and review the top 20 results. For each list:
- Are you included?
- What “best for” label have they given you?
- Is that label consistent with how you want to be positioned?
If you’re missing from key lists, you need a direct outreach strategy. Contact the authors, offer updated information, provide media assets, or offer to be a source for future pieces. If you’re on the lists but the positioning is wrong, reach out to correct it.
Beyond listicles, three other source types matter:
Review platforms (G2, Capterra, Trustpilot). These are among the most-cited sources in LLM training data for app recommendations. If you have 17,000 App Store ratings but zero G2 reviews, your social proof is trapped in a walled garden that LLMs can’t access.
Reddit threads. Perplexity and ChatGPT heavily cite Reddit for app recommendations. Genuine user mentions in relevant subreddits carry real weight. Monitor your category’s subreddits and participate authentically when your app is relevant.
Third-party editorial coverage. Independent reviews, features, and mentions from industry publications signal validation that LLMs weight heavily.
Pillar 3: Optimize Your App Store Listing for Semantic Clarity
Your App Store description was probably optimized for keyword matching. AI needs something different. It needs to understand you, not match you.
AI systems extract four things from your listing:
- What is your app? (One clear sentence)
- Who is it for? (Multiple specific personas)
- What outcomes does it deliver? (Not features, but results)
- Why choose it over alternatives? (Differentiation)
Your first paragraph is critical. Not for conversion. For AI comprehension.
The test: Copy your App Store description into ChatGPT and ask: “Based on this description, who is this app for and why would someone choose it over alternatives?”
A well-optimized description produces a clear, specific answer. A poorly optimized one produces hedged language like “this app seems to be designed for people who want to…” That uncertainty means AI won’t confidently recommend you.
Pillar 4: Build Review and Social Signal Strength
AI models learn about your app from what users say about it. Not just App Store reviews, but Reddit threads, G2 reviews, YouTube tutorials, and Twitter discussions.
The language users use in reviews becomes the language AI uses to describe your app. If your reviews say “great for beginners but crashes a lot,” that’s what AI will tell people.
Audit your presence across these surfaces:
- G2, Capterra, Product Hunt (structured review platforms)
- Reddit threads mentioning your category
- YouTube reviews and tutorials
- Twitter/X discussions
For each: Are you present? What’s the sentiment? What specific language do reviewers use to describe you?
If the language is inconsistent or negative, you have a reputation alignment problem that no amount of metadata optimization will fix.
Pillar 5: Prepare for Direct AI Integration
Apple’s App Intents framework lets your app expose actions to Siri and Spotlight. Google’s Engage SDK surfaces your app in Assistant and Discover. Without these integrations, your app can’t be part of the “AI routes user directly to the right action” experience.
Today this is optional. By 2027, it will be expected.
This pillar takes development resources, so it belongs at the end of the sequence. But start planning for it now. The apps that build these integrations early will have a compounding advantage as AI-first discovery becomes the default.
Technical Foundations: Schema, llms.txt, and AI Crawler Access
Beyond content and positioning, there are technical signals you can implement that help AI systems understand and categorize your app. Most app teams skip these entirely, which means doing them gives you an edge.
Structured Data (JSON-LD Schema)
Add SoftwareApplication schema markup to your app’s website. This tells AI crawlers, in a structured format, exactly what your app is:

Also add Organization or Person schema for your company, with sameAs links pointing to all your profiles (App Store, LinkedIn, Twitter, G2). This builds entity recognition: AI needs to understand that your website, your App Store listing, and your G2 profile all refer to the same product.
The llms.txt File
The llms.txt specification is a markdown file placed at your website’s root (yoursite.com/llms.txt) that helps AI systems understand your site and product. Think of it as a robots.txt for LLMs, but instead of blocking crawlers, it feeds them structured context.
Include: who you are, what your product does, key features, pricing, links to important pages. Write it as factual prose, not marketing copy. AI systems parse it for entity information, not conversion.
AI Crawler Access
Most websites either ignore AI crawlers or actively block them. Check your robots.txt for directives about GPTBot, ClaudeBot, Google-Extended, and PerplexityBot. If you’re blocking these, AI systems literally cannot access your content.
Explicitly allowing AI crawlers (while most competitors block them) gives your content an indexing advantage.
FAQ Sections with Schema
Add FAQ sections to key pages using FAQPage schema markup. The FAQ format mirrors how users query LLMs, making your answers high-signal for training data. Structure questions around how people actually ask about your category: “What is the best app for X?” and “How do I choose a [category] app?”
Common Mistakes That Kill AI Discoverability
1. Over-indexing on App Store metadata and ignoring the web. Your App Store description has minimal influence on what AI recommends. The web presence (list articles, reviews, discussions) is where AI forms its opinion. Teams that focus all their effort on the App Store while neglecting their external footprint get left out of AI recommendations.
2. Inconsistent positioning across sources. If your website calls you an “enterprise productivity tool,” your App Store listing positions you for consumers, and your Reddit reviews say you’re “great for students,” AI gets three different signals and trusts none of them. Audit your positioning across all surfaces and align it before anything else.
3. Treating AI discovery as a one-time audit. AI models are continuously updated. A list article that ranked you well in 2025 may drop off by 2026. New competitors enter. Sentiment shifts. Treating this as a project with a finish line is the same mistake teams make with traditional ASO.
4. Chasing AI visibility without fixing review sentiment. If your reviews are negative, getting your app onto “best of” lists may backfire. AI will recommend you, then qualify it with the criticism from your reviews. Fix the product experience before amplifying your visibility.
5. Assuming App Store ratings translate to AI visibility. A 4.8-star app with 17,000 ratings can be completely invisible to every major LLM. App Store ratings live inside a walled garden. LLMs learn from the open web. Strong ratings with no web presence means your social proof is locked up where AI can’t see it.
The 30-Day GEO Action Plan for App Teams
This is the sequence that moves the needle fastest based on what I’ve seen across real app audits.
Week 1: Assess and Baseline
Day 1-2: Run your AI visibility test. Open ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini. Ask 10-12 category queries and 6 branded queries. Record everything: mentions, position, framing, competitors, cited sources.
Day 3-4: Audit your training signal sources. Google “best [your category] app” and check the top 20 results. Are you featured? Check G2, Capterra, Trustpilot, Product Hunt for active profiles. Search Reddit for your app name and category. Count your third-party editorial mentions.
Day 5: Score and diagnose. You now have a baseline. Where are the biggest gaps: listicle coverage, review platforms, community mentions, or editorial coverage?
Week 2: Quick Technical Wins
Day 6-7: Implement schema markup. Add SoftwareApplication, Organization, and FAQPage schema to your website. If you already have schema, audit it for completeness.
Day 8: Create or update llms.txt. Place it at your site root. Include product description, key features, company info, and important page links.
Day 9-10: Audit your robots.txt. Make sure you’re not blocking AI crawlers. Explicitly allow GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, and Google-Extended.
Week 3: Build External Presence
Day 11-13: Review platform setup. Create or update profiles on G2, Capterra, and at least one other relevant platform. Invite 5-10 existing customers to leave reviews.
Day 14-16: Listicle outreach. Identify the 5 most important roundup articles for your category. Contact the authors with a short, specific pitch. Lead with what makes your app different, not that you want to be included.
Day 17: Reddit reconnaissance. Identify 3-5 subreddits where your target users ask for app recommendations. Start monitoring. Participate authentically when relevant.
Week 4: Content and Monitoring
Day 18-20: Create comparison content. Write 1-2 honest “[Your App] vs [Competitor]” pages on your website. Include specific feature comparisons, acknowledge competitor strengths, and highlight your differentiation.
Day 21-23: Rewrite key descriptions for semantic clarity. Update your App Store description’s first paragraph and your website’s product description to pass the “ask ChatGPT what this app does” test.
Day 24-25: Set up ongoing monitoring. Schedule a monthly AI visibility test (same queries, same platforms). Track changes over time.
Day 26-30: Re-test and adjust. Run your category queries again. Some changes (schema, llms.txt) may already show impact on platforms with live retrieval like Perplexity. Note what’s changed and plan your next sprint.
Monitoring Your AI Visibility
AI discovery isn’t a one-time fix. Here’s how to maintain it:
Monthly: Run your category query test across ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini. Track which queries you appear for, what position, and how you’re described. Note changes from the previous month.
Quarterly: Re-audit your listicle presence. Check whether new “best of” articles have been published in your category. Update your outreach targets.
Trigger-based: Re-run your semantic clarity test whenever you update your App Store description. Any significant change to your metadata is a signal to verify how AI now describes you.
When a competitor enters: Run the presence test immediately. A new well-funded competitor will often capture AI mindshare quickly through PR and content. You need to know if that’s happening.
What This Means for Your Growth Strategy
If you’re spending $5K+ per month on user acquisition, you need to add AI Discovery to your growth checklist. Not instead of traditional ASO and paid UA, but on top of it.
The apps that optimize for AI discovery now will have a compounding advantage as AI-mediated discovery grows. LLM training data has a lag. The signals you build today shape recommendations months from now. The apps that wait will find themselves invisible to an increasingly large percentage of potential users.
I’ve spent the past year auditing how apps perform across AI recommendation engines. The pattern is clear: most apps aren’t invisible because they’re bad products. They’re invisible because the infrastructure that feeds AI recommendations doesn’t exist. App Store ratings, no matter how strong, don’t reach these systems.
The difference between apps AI recommends and apps AI ignores is almost always the web presence surrounding the product. The apps that build that presence now will be the ones AI confidently recommends in 2027 and beyond.
